Background of the Study
ATMs are critical interfaces between banks and their customers, playing a significant role in daily transactions. AB Microfinance Bank has focused on enhancing the reliability of its ATM network to sustain high levels of customer engagement. Upgrades include modernizing hardware, deploying advanced monitoring systems, and implementing predictive maintenance protocols to ensure that ATMs operate continuously with minimal downtime (Olayinka, 2023). The bank’s efforts are aimed at reducing transaction failures and delays, thereby improving the overall customer experience.
A reliable ATM network is essential for maintaining customer trust, especially in regions where access to physical branches is limited. By ensuring that ATMs are available 24/7, the bank can offer uninterrupted access to financial services, which is crucial for customer retention and engagement (Ejiro, 2024). Real-time data analytics and centralized control systems enable the bank to detect and rectify issues promptly, thus reducing service disruptions. These improvements also contribute to operational cost savings and reinforce the bank’s competitive position in the market (Chinwe, 2025).
This study examines how improvements in ATM network reliability influence customer engagement at AB Microfinance Bank. It explores the relationship between system uptime, customer satisfaction, and usage frequency, and identifies the key challenges that must be overcome to maintain a robust ATM network.
Statement of the Problem
Despite considerable investments in upgrading ATM infrastructure, AB Microfinance Bank continues to face challenges that affect network reliability and, consequently, customer engagement. Inconsistent performance across different regions, often due to poor network connectivity and aging hardware in some locations, leads to sporadic service disruptions (Ibrahim, 2023). These inconsistencies can result in customer frustration and reduce trust in the bank’s digital service channels.
Furthermore, integrating advanced monitoring systems with older ATM units sometimes produces data gaps, delaying the detection and resolution of issues (Nwankwo, 2024). High maintenance costs and logistical challenges in servicing remote locations further exacerbate these problems. As a result, despite the technological upgrades, the overall reliability of the ATM network remains suboptimal, affecting customer satisfaction and retention. This study seeks to identify these issues and propose targeted strategies to enhance ATM network reliability and, in turn, sustain customer engagement.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of ATM network reliability on customer engagement at AB Microfinance Bank.
To identify technical and operational challenges affecting ATM performance.
To recommend strategies for improving network reliability and minimizing service disruptions.
